Escaping Reality
By: Marcellus Watts
Leaving the very spot I am
Leaving behind myself
Leaving behind my troubles
Running away or leaving…
There’s no difference
Escaping from life itself
Though be it temporary it’s enough
For a break I’m in desperate need of
A short break or long break
Let me hide away from life itself
Cruel and relentless
No matter what I’ll never truly escape
Life will find me and retrieve me
It’ll pump me with fear, depression, and despair
Life and reality will find me once again
There’s no way I can escape them
As I hide in my fantasies
Let me pretend to fly away, far, far away…
Leave me with my fantasies
I’ve escaped reality
For now I’m free until reality retrieves me
Please let me escape reality
Fantasies please hide me away
Imaginations please carry me away
Reality is on its way to thwart my escape
Once again I’m escaping reality
Soon it’ll find me then pump me with anger, sadness and angst
Let me run and escape to my fantasies
Allow me to escape reality
Let me pretend to fly away to my fantasies
This text was specifically selected because of the way the author articulated the idea of escaping reality into a relate-able and powerful poem. The author expresses her understanding of the chosen theme through her well formulated poem that leaves no secrets from the reader. She represents her understanding of the difficulty of escaping reality by leaving nothing from the reader’s imagination and by putting all off her difficulties straight forward to the reader on paper. This poem represents my theme in an honest but dark way which really captivated me and hopefully other readers. Marcellus Watts expresses the difficulty of getting away from the troubles that haunt her reality. She wants to hide from life itself but the responsibilities of her real life seem to always come back to retrieve her to reality.Reading and writing poems can be an escape from a reality in itself which makes it a splendid type of text to represent the theme. This poem relates to my theme very distinctively because of the way escaping reality was portrayed. It is portrayed as a inner demon that constantly comes back to haunt you no matter where your imagination or fantasies take you. Escaping from reality is a hard-fought never ending battle until you realize that the escapes are only momentarily and if they were not, we would have nowhere to escape to.
I related well to this text, as I myself found it in the past extremely troublesome to hide away from most of the cruel relentless realities that were existent to me . It really helped me understand my theme to a better extent because it puts into perspective the emotional roller-coaster and fight people can have against themselves to get away from their reality of life. These people could be anyone close to you. A neighbour, your best friend, a brother or a sister you may never know the lengths they go through to escape their own realities. Knowing a few people that are knit tight with me who have had problems with getting sober helps me really connect with this poem and theme. They throw away everything into an addiction that they think is helping all of their problems but in reality it is just causing more of them while pushing their more important morals to the side. Some folk tend drown themselves in their struggle’s and let themselves waste away. They make their existence mundane with this way of escaping reality. They should not let their problems be their whole reality but flourish in them as they are what make us stronger. The famous basketball sensation Micheal Jordan once quoted that “Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.”
